SRINAGAR, MAY 5: In a deeply distressing incident that has sent shockwaves across Jammu and Kashmir, a 45-year-old woman from the nomadic Bakerwal community was allegedly gang-raped and murdered four men in the Nishat area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The victim had migrated from the Reasi district along with other members of her community just a week ago as part of their seasonal migration pattern. According to her family and community members, she had left her tent around 5 PM to graze cattle and never returned. A search party later discovered her grievously injured, and one of the accused, whose clothes were soaked in blood, was apprehended on the spot and handed over to the police.

Despite efforts to seek immediate medical attention, the woman was first taken to a nearfacility where no doctors were available. She was then shifted to a hospital in Srinagar, where she was declared dead.

The Jammu & Kashmir Police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of the law, and all four accused have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing.

The brutal crime has triggered widespread condemnation and demands for swift justice. Politicians and community leaders across party lines have called for fast-track proceedings and the harshest punishment for the perpetrators.

PDP MLA Rafiq Ahmed Naik stated, “This horrifying act demands immediate and unwavering justice. I strongly urge authorities to ensure a swift and transparent trial of the culprits.”

National Conference senior leader Ali Mohammad Sagar added, “Justice demands swift and severe punishment. Let us unite against violence and foster a culture of safety for all.”

Other prominent voices, including Sajjad Gani Lone (Peoples Conference), Altaf Bukhari (J&K Apni Party), and Sheikh Khursheed (AIP), have all called for stringent action and policy measures to prevent such atrocities in the future, including a crackdown on substance abuse.

The woman is survived five children.

This tragic event is a grave reminder of the vulnerability of nomadic and marginalized communities, and a call to action for authorities and society at large to ensure safety, dignity, and justice for all.
