In a strong and resolute diplomatic move, the Government of India has summoned the senior-most Pakistani diplomat stationed in New Delhi, Mr. Saad Ahmad Warraich, in response to the brutal and cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, that resulted in the tragic loss of 26 innocent tourist lives.
The summoning took place late on Wednesday night at the South Block headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs. This action underscores India’s deep outrage and serious concerns over the continuing pattern of cross-border terrorism originating from Pakistani soil. Mr. Warraich, the Chargé d’Affaires at the Pakistan High Commission, was handed a formal demarche conveying the Government of India’s unequivocal condemnation and strong protest against the heinous incident.
During the meeting, Indian officials conveyed that such targeted acts of violence against civilians reflect a disturbing intent to destabilize peace and sow fear. The Ministry of External Affairs also formally communicated a series of immediate and significant steps India is undertaking in response:
- Closure of the Attari-Wagah Border Crossing: cross-border movement at the primary land checkpoint has been suspended until further notice.
- Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty Provisions: India has halted cooperation under the decades-old water-sharing treaty, citing grave violations of mutual trust and regional peace.
- Cancellation of Visa Waivers: previously granted visas under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals have been annulled with immediate effect.
- Diplomatic Downgrading: India has reduced its diplomatic presence in Islamabad and expelled defense attachés from the Pakistani mission in Delhi.
The Ministry further reiterated that credible evidence, including intelligence inputs and field investigations, has linked the Pahalgam attack to Pakistani nationals operating under the guise of militant organizations. The Jammu & Kashmir Police has already issued public notices naming three suspects involved, two of whom are confirmed to be Pakistani nationals. Rewards have been announced for actionable intelligence leading to their apprehension.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior official remarked, “The summoning reflects India’s deep anguish and moral outrage. Terrorism cannot be justified, ignored, or allowed to fester behind political facades. We have made it clear—there will be consequences.”
India has once again called upon the Government of Pakistan to take verifiable action against terrorist groups operating with impunity on its territory. New Delhi has urged the international community to hold Pakistan accountable and to stand united against the scourge of terrorism.
The Government of India remains committed to the safety and security of all its citizens and to preserving the integrity and peace of its territories. While mourning the innocent lives lost, the nation stands determined to ensure that such barbarity is not repeated and that justice is delivered swiftly and decisively.
